Admissions, Academics, and Finances

Admission RequirementsUG from high school: GPA + test score + AP exams OR IB scores + IB subjects
UG transfer admission and Graduate admission based on GPA and any academic prerequisites.
Application Dates and DeadlinesUG: Rolling admissions for international students. We recommend applying at the same time as applications to US universities. Overseas Australian high school and transfer students apply at the end of senior year through VTAC.
Graduate: Nov 30 for Sem 1 (Feb – Jun) and April 30 for Sem 2 (Aug – Nov). Some graduate degrees in Law, Health, Veterinary Science and Fine Arts start only in Jan/Feb, with applications due 4 – 6 months the year before.
How to ApplyInternational students may apply direct to the university online or through an authorized agent. See https://study.unimelb.edu.au/how-to-apply.
Overseas Australians applying for Bachelor’s programs must apply through VTAC (https://www.vtac.edu.au/)
Standardized Testing PolicyFor the US high school diploma, Melbourne requires the SAT or ACT or an aggregate score of AP exams. AP exams are also the most common way to meet academic prerequisites and the English language proficiency requirement but there are alternative ways to satisfy these requirements.

Important Information

The University of Melbourne provides affordable access to excellence. Australia’s leading university, it ranks #27 in the world. The main campus is situated in the heart of Melbourne, seven times voted the most livable city in the world and regarded as Australia’s sporting and cultural capital.

Admissions is transparent and objective. Most degrees base admission only on academic achievement and do not take personal statements, references or extracurricular activities into consideration.

Counselor Information

See the US high school diploma guide (https://go.unimelb.edu.au/b276) and IB diploma guide (https://go.unimelb.edu.au/qj4i) for reference.

Semester 1 runs from February to June and Semester 2 from July to November. Most degrees provide the flexibility to start in either semester, as orientation and core classes are held every semester. Graduating from the US in May or June, students can apply for the mid-year intake but then apply to defer to start in February of the following year. Deferrals tend to be more automatic in Australia, providing students with a mini gap year. Melbourne guarantees campus housing for students.

Both of the North America staff, Todd St Vrain and Julia Jerving have studied in the US and Australia. Please reach out with any questions at [email protected] or book a meeting with either of them at http://go.unimelb.edu.au/2eci.
